Tell Me a little bit about your shop and blog

Rock-A-Bow is what I like to call a mommy-based business. Almost everything I make has been inspired by my kids and their friends. The shop is filled with products that my daughter loves, from bows and tutus to artfolios. Very soon I will be releasing a dress line that is completely inspired by her and some of her besties! We are all super excited about it.

I originally started the blog for business only but that lasted about 5 minutes. I couldn’t help but writing more about life than business. It has become place for me to share my faith, my life as a mommy and a little about my crafting and business.

How do you balance life and your blog and shop?

Balancing everything in life can be a challenge. Top off that challenge with my type Z personality and welcome to crazytown! I try to get all blogging done during naptimes and “after hours”. I complete orders and products with a little bit of help from my 2 year old. Her current job of choice is to draw up new designs for the shop. Her scribbles inspire me. I think the best piece of advice I’ve ever gotten about balancing is to keep my kids included. I took the knowledge and ran with it. Rock-A-Bow has become quite the family business.

What do you love most about summertime?

Oh man! What’s not to love about summer? Our little family loves the beach. We love to play in the water or outdoors in general. Rhi and I l-o-v-e summer dresses and the colors that come out during the summer season. If I had to narrow it down to just one thing though, I think that I would have to say that our California summer nights are my favorite. A cool drink and a patio chair and I’m in heaven!

Any advice for someone wanting to open their own shop?

Find something you truly love doing. The more you love your product, the more likely others will too. Plus, you want to enjoy what you are doing on a daily basis and do not want to get burnt out. So stick to what you love!

Duchess and Duke

Tell Me a little bit about your shop and blog
At Duchess and Duke we make handcrafted bath products from luxury ingredients. Some signature ingredients we use are African Shea butter, silk, rose absolute, dead sea salts and mud. One of my favorite ingredients is our honey which is responsibly harvested from our private apiary which is kept in a secluded 40 acre parcel deep in the foothills of Northern California. We go as far as to harvest and process the honey ourselves and I have personally been stung over 30 times in one day in the pursuit of quality ingredients. We plan on growing the company by adding a line of signature perfumes and fragrances which we’ll incorporate into our bath products, and we want to develop other skin care products like lotions, creams, and balms. We also are working with some great artists to add a line of shaving hardware and accessories, and you can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be out their running a lathe as soon as I can free up more time myself.

How do you balance life and your blog and shop?
We don’t! We have poured our heart and souls into this company. A famous quote credited to Confucius goes something like, “Find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” and we’d have to agree.

What do you love most about summertime?
We love the delta breeze that picks up through Sacramento and firing up the Barbecue.

Any advice for someone wanting to open their own shop?
It’s hard work, but once you commit to your idea you’re set free from all other distractions. We do everything ourselves because it goes hand in hand with our philosophy about living production vs consumption focused lifestyles. If you do it right, your business can be the engine which drives you to learn new things, travel to exciting places, and meet interesting people. Once we’re able to go full time, we plan on spending even more time studying chemistry and it’s application to cosmetics. Next up for us? We’re working with an amazing pattern designer and artist to produce our own hand printed packaging!

Caroline G Bows

Tell Me a little bit about your shop and blog.
My shop is called Caroline G where I sell all things girly; from bows to headbands to tutus. I started my blog as a way to capture this journey of moving from working from someone else to working for myself.

How do you balance life and your blog and shop?
This has been a work in progress, but its much improved now. I used to work as a teacher and run my business on the side; it was SO hard to balance. I would work 8-4 as a teacher and then sometimes 4-12 as a business owner. I do not recommend that lifestyle for anyone! Now that I’m working full-time for myself, I’m finding a much better balance. I take breaks as needed, go out to business meetings, plan time to see friends and family. I’m really big into exercising daily, so I make a point to build that into my schedule. I realized that running actually helps me regroup and be more productive, so its a must most days. I’m still working on getting my blog up and running, so I’m having to rearrange how I spend my time in order to put more time and energy into it.

What do you love most about summertime?
I love everything about summertime! 🙂 I think my top favorites are lemonade and being poolside with friends and family.

Any advice for someone wanting to open their own shop?
You can do it! I think having a positive “can do” attitude is the best place to start. If you don’t believe in yourself and your products why should anyone else. I think there are plenty of excuses to make about not opening a shop, but if its something you are dreaming on doing, then go for it. I truly believe you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Worse case scenario; it doesn’t work out. But won’t you be proud of yourself for trying?!
