A couple weekends ago I attended a photography class that my good friend, Miranda, was teaching. Miranda is an awesome photographer in the Orange County area. You may have seen the pictures she took at Brayden’s 2nd birthday.
During the class Miranda talked about some great tips for getting good pictures of your kids. Since I often find myself struggling to connect with my kids and make them smile when I’m behind the camera, I was eager to try out some of her stellar tips.
I’m still working on perfecting them, but I thought I’d share a few with you.
1. Get down to their level. Don’t be afraid to roll around in the grass and get a little, well, wet in this case.
2. Play games from behind the lens. Games such as Peek a Boo are great. I got some of my best pictures by joking with Katelyn telling her not to look at the camera and not to smile. It had her cracking up!
3. Get them involved. During the shoot show them a picture every once in a while so they can see what you’re doing. Katelyn loves seeing what the picture looks like and if she likes it too, she’ll take more. Once we’ve been shooting for a little while she gets comfortable around the camera and then starts posing and asking me to take pictures.
Of course I tried some of these wonderful tips with my son, but all he wanted to do was put on his boots and play in the dirt. Guess I’ll have to keep working with him.
Thanks Miranda for those great tips!!!
