Every day when it hits four o’clock I feel myself begin dragging and in need of a second wind. My first cup of coffee from the morning has used up all it’s power and it’s time for round two. Four o’clock is when my day shifts, our babysitter leaves for the day, the kids are often winding down, enjoying a snack and prepping for homework time. Yet in the midst of this shift, this second cup allows me to move or shift my mind out of work mode and into “mom” mode.
Yesterday as I settled into the couch with a hot cup of coffee steaming between my finger tips, it occurred to me that I didn’t hear the kids. Somewhere in our small home they were playing quietly, not fighting, but most likely getting into some kind of trouble. I knew I should’ve been worried, but that sweet, warm cup of coffee was calling my name so I closed my eyes and I sat. Some where close to the bottom of my cup I began to hear fighting from one of the bedrooms. I signed, but didn’t move. I waited to see if they could sort it out themselves. They did. I swallowed the last of my coffee, while it was till warm and moved into the next part of my day.
If you’re new here, you might be wondering how the name Diary of an Addict came about. It came from this idea behind the little addictions or the “must do’s” we have in our lives that keep us sane so we can do that “have to’s.” After a long day of work, sending and responding to emails, it’s hard for me to come home and immediately shift gears into my next job, being a mom and a wife. As much as I love that job with my whole heart, it doesn’t mean that I don’t need “me time.” Small moments where I can gather my thoughts, clear my mind, shift my focus. Sometimes all it takes is fifteen minutes of quite and hot cup of coffee, warm to the last sip.
These moments make us better. They make us strong, more able to face the remaining moments in our day. Selfishly, I’ll take these moments at least once a day if I can have them. The result is not balance, but it sure results in keeping my sanity.
Do you have “have to’s” in your life?

This post resonated with me more than I would sometimes care to admit. Maybe because I’ve seen what the trolls can do.
